A Funky News Paper Caddy Step by Step

Well, I am back, after a little break due to moving house, (what a nightmare) I am sharing this up cycled news paper caddy. I picked this up in my local charity store and it was an ugly dark brown shiny pile of rubbish.

I will try and keep this post nice and short ;)

Here is what I used:
A fine sanding block
Paint Brush.

The Caddy was taken to pieces and was given two coats of Decoarts Chalk Finish paints Treasure, I wanted to try out some of the bolder colours in the range this time and get a little out of my comfort zone.
I used not resist technique this time, I just waited for the paint to dry and then using a very fine grit sanding block started to distress the surfaces sanding back down to the original finish. Its a good idea if not using a resist like the candle technique or Vaseline which helps clog the dust a little to wear a mask.

Leaving the outward facing ends un distressed I used the Harlequin stencil from The Crafters Workshop, a big thank you to these guys who kindly sent me some stencils earlier in the year.
I applied the Heritage colour, a bright orange, using a stencil brush and stippled the paint through the stencil.
As you can see the stencil does not cover the whole piece but it was easy enough to line up the design and finish of the top section.

Once dry I distressed the ends, here is a before and after.

To finish of I used Decoarts French Script Stencil from the Chalk range and applied some Carbon paint, I only used sections of the stencil and just picked out some of the words to add a little more detail to the ends.
All the pieces were given a couple of coats of the Soft Touch Varnish.Once dry it was put back together.

Thanks for stopping by normal service will be resuming now we are getting settled, thans for sticking with me.xx

  6. What a great alter! I've obtained a rather yucky looking bookcase and am on the hunt for ideas on how to alter it! I've added this post to my list of ideas!

  7. That's really cool! What an improvement on the bright shininess! I've been doing similar things to bright shiny 1/12th scale furniture for the dollshouses - we love the chalk paints! - all will be revealed soon...
